Moving away from Wix is usually a controlled rebuild, not a simple file transfer. The safest approach is to prepare the replacement website first, preserve important URLs and change the domain only when everything else is ready.
Can a Wix website be moved to another host?
Not in its existing Wix form. Wix explains that its sites rely on proprietary software and must run on Wix’s infrastructure, so the finished site cannot simply be exported and uploaded to another hosting company. The content you created remains yours, but the replacement website normally has to be rebuilt on the new platform. See Wix’s current guidance on exporting or hosting a Wix site elsewhere.
A rebuild can reproduce the useful content and brand while improving the structure, performance or editing arrangement. It does not need to be a pixel-for-pixel copy, and copying licensed Wix templates or third-party assets may not be appropriate.
Keep the current website, domain services and email active until the replacement has been checked and the launch plan is ready.
Audit the current setup
Before rebuilding anything, identify which services are actually connected to Wix. They may be billed together but they are not the same thing.
- The website and Wix plan.
- The domain registration and DNS records.
- Business email, often Google Workspace.
- Forms, contacts and email-marketing lists.
- Store products, bookings, events or paid Wix apps.
- Analytics, Search Console and advertising tags.
Create a list of every current page and its public URL. Record which pages receive traffic, enquiries or external links. Download original images and copy written content from your own records where possible; do not rely on screenshots as the only source.
Export data from any Wix feature that supports it, such as product lists or contacts, and verify what fields the replacement system can import. Website pages, booking records, ticketing and mailing lists may each need different migration methods.
Rebuild before changing the domain
Develop the replacement website on a private or temporary address while the Wix site remains live. Recreate the page structure, forms, integrations and search metadata, then test desktop and mobile layouts thoroughly.
Preserve useful page addresses
Where practical, keep the same clean paths—for example, move an existing /contact page to /contact on the new site. If an address must change, add a permanent 301 redirect from the old path to the closest relevant new page.
Do not send every removed URL to the homepage. A redirect should take visitors and search engines to the page that best replaces the old content.
Move integrations deliberately
Replace Wix-specific forms, events, bookings or payments with the chosen new tools and run real test submissions. Confirm where each notification goes, what the customer sees and who can access the data.
Decide what happens to the domain
You can often point a domain at the new host without immediately transferring its registration. This can make the launch faster and leave domain billing where it is while the new website settles.
If the domain was purchased through Wix and you want another registrar to manage it, Wix provides a transfer-away process. Standard domains normally use an authorisation code; a .co.uk domain uses the new provider’s IPS tag. Follow the current Wix instructions for transferring a domain away or the separate .co.uk transfer process.
Domain transfers can be restricted shortly after registration, a previous transfer or certain contact-detail changes. Confirm eligibility and access to the registrant email before choosing this route.
Protect business email
Changing website hosting does not require changing the email address, but altering DNS incorrectly can stop mail delivery. Before making any DNS change, record all existing MX, TXT, CNAME and verification records—not only the website A record.
If Google Workspace was purchased through Wix, the mailbox can remain a separate service or its billing can be transferred to Google with Wix Customer Care. Wix states that cancelling the website subscription does not itself cancel the Google Workspace account. Check the current Google Workspace guidance from Wix before changing the account.
Send and receive test emails after the DNS switch. Also check SPF, DKIM and DMARC records where used, because successful inbox delivery depends on more than the mailbox login.
A safer launch sequence
- Finish and test the replacement website on a temporary address.
- Confirm the final page URLs and prepare necessary 301 redirects.
- Back up content, contacts and any exportable operational data.
- Record the full DNS zone and confirm who manages business email.
- Point the domain to the replacement site during a quieter period.
- Test HTTPS, www/non-www behaviour, forms, bookings and email.
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console and inspect key URLs.
- Monitor old URLs, search coverage and enquiries for several weeks.
- Cancel redundant Wix services only after the new arrangement is proven.
